MASAI LAWSON: Hey. I’m Masai Lawson. I’m the manager of Talent Acquisition at Gannett Fleming.
You know, I can relate to being a new employee at Gannett Fleming, a relatively new employee at Gannett Fleming. I started with the firm about 3 and 1/2 years ago, and I didn’t quite know what to expect. I knew it was an engineering firm, so I had this perception that it was a kind of stodgy conservative organization. And over the 3 and 1/2 years that I’ve been here, I’ve found it to be just the opposite.
This is a company that understands what it means to think outside of the box. They promote innovation. They look for individuals who challenge current assumptions. And with a hundred years of history under our belt, we remain privately-held and remained relevant in this industry. Career opportunities, I think, are endless. As long as you are motivated, and driven, and demonstrate the right leadership skills, I think sky’s the limit. So that’s more than one reason, but certainly good reasons to come join our firm.
If you look at our emerging markets, power is huge. Not just here in central PA, where we are, but globally. In addition to that, we’re looking at the international market. Here in North America, we’re really making a big push in the Canadian market. But then if we look at the Middle East, there’s a lot of opportunity there. We just recently hired a managing director to lead our efforts in the Middle East and North Africa.
And so we’re really putting a lot of emphasis from a hiring perspective on being able to identify people that have an interest in working not only domestically, but also globally. There’ll be assignments that will be available there, making us more agile, so to speak, as well as bringing in that experience from an international perspective to our clients. So lots of exciting stuff going on.
My team, obviously, from a recruiting perspective is, we’re the welcome mat, if you will. This is what it’s like to work at Gannett Fleming. We can only sell the dream and the opportunities so far. But each time that I’ve debriefed with a candidate after speaking with them, I always hear, wow, I really made a connection with that person, or, wow this seems like a really good place to work.
Some things are tangible, as far as benefits and salary, and then there are those intangibles like the culture, the people, the vibe that you get when you walk in the door, how helpful people are, and how some people really want to see you succeed, and they will go that extra mile. I can certainly attest to that since I’ve been here from my peers in human resources to all the way up to the chairman and CEO of the firm. I’ve really felt the support of the people here wanting to see me do well.
